The Coimbatore region has been ruled by the Cholas, the later Pandyas, and the Vijayanagar Empire. Madurai Nayaks are believed to have been named after a chieftain called Koyan. In the 17th century, the city became a part of the Kingdom of Mysore until conquest by the British East India Company.

Kodaikanal

Also named "The Gift of the Forest", Kodaikanal was established in 1845 as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases of the plains. Much of the local economy is based on the hospitality industry, which serves tourism.

The town is connected to the rest of India by road and rail, having many historic sites and natural beauty, which attracts tourists. It was originally a tribal land, occupied by the Todas along with other tribes who coexisted through trade. A History states that the area which is now called as the 'Old Ooty' was originally occupied by the Todas who then handed over that part of the town to John Sullivan, the then Governor of Coimbatore.
